AREA909
+ + + + + + +
for Wildcat! 3.x BBS Systems
version 1.00 compiled 10/30/92
by Michael A. Conley
Another Public Domain SysOp's Utility from the Charlatan's Cabin BBS
(714) 654-7337
REQUIRES BRUN40.EXE ANYWHERE IN YOUR PATH. BRUN40.EXE is the Microsoft
QuickBasic runtime module for version 4.0. It's readily available, but
if you have trouble locating it, call the MSI HQ board or call the
Charlatan's Cabin BBS and download BRUN40.ZIP.
WHAT IT DOES:
=============
Pacific Bell is splitting the (714) area code in Southern California on
November 14, 1992. Between that date and May of 1993, a gradual changeover
has been allowed for subscribers to get used to their new area code, (909).
AREA909 will read through your ALLUSERS.DAT file and locate any (714) phone
numbers (both voice and data) and, if they are in a prefix which is being
changed to (909), it will update the user record.
CAUTION: You MUST make a backup of ALLUSERS.DAT before proceeding, and you
should NOT run AREA909 while any nodes of your BBS are online
because of possible conflict with a locked user record.
EXPIRATION: Remember that eventually, Ma Bell will be reassigning those
prefixes that were "released" by this process. We don't
expect to see this before the middle of 1994 at the earliest.
DO NOT use AREA909 after that time, because the prefix lookup
table will be obsolete.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM:
====================
First make a BACKUP of your ALLUSERS.DAT file. Next, run AREA909. It will
locate your MAKEWILD.DAT file and your ALLUSERS.DAT file, and then verify
that you want to proceed with the area code changes. Once you've answered
"Y", the rest it automatic, and you can watch the program's progress on the
screen. Depending on the speed of your system and the size of your user file
it should take only a couple of minutes, on average.
OTHER AREA CODES:
=================
AREA909 is designed so that we can easily "clone" other versions of it
to handle area code splits in other regions, such as the 510 area code
in Oakland, CA, etc. If you live in or near one of those areas, and would
like to see a version of the program for a particular area code, please
mail me a listing which includes the following:
1) Original area code (to be split)
2) New area code
3) COMPLETE, accurate list of prefixes to be reassigned from the old
area code to the new one. If you check, there are probably some
pages in your phone book which mark the ones that'll change.
Mail this listing to:
The Charlatan's Cabin BBS
ATTN: Area code changes
P.O. Box 1572
Studio City, CA 91614-0572
If you enclose a formatted disk and sufficient return postage, I'll
mail you a copy of the new program when it's ready ... or you may
just keep an eye out at the Charlatan's Cabin or the MSI HQ BBS for
the specific version you need. They will be named: AREA###.ZIP, where
the ### will be the NEW area code.
PROBLEMS, SUGGESTIONS:
======================
This program is public domain. I don't seek or accept any donations for
this or any of my other Wildcat! utility programs, including TODAYBBS,
FLOP, MSTAT, USTAT, and others.
I welcome suggestions, and will try to help (no guarantees) if there are
problems.
You may contact me at The Charlatan's Cabin BBS (714) 654-7337. Mention
your Wildcat! registration number in the comment and you'll be upgraded to
visiting sysop level without the usually required registration by mail.
You may also leave a message via CompuServe EMail. My CompuServe account
number is 70250,220. I also regularly check the Mustang Software head-
quarters BBS, especially the "3rd Party Utilities Help" conference.
Please, NO VOICE CALLS. This isn't meant to be unfriendly, but with the
price of public domain software these days ... I just can't afford to be
"on call." I WILL respond to your questions via my BBS or CompuServe,
or via the Mustang Software registered SysOp BBS.
